welcome to the world inside my head

as much as i hate to say it, i think i might like this photoshop collage thing! what's happening to me?!?!?! soon, i'll be drawing and painting on my photos, too! this was really sort of fun and fast to make once i figured out a direction. granted it took me a week to get over the whole idea of making a "photo collage" out of scans. compositionally, it still needs something bottom right, but i'm ok with it as-is, for the quick example that it is.

a prize goes to the person who can correctly id all of the different objects used to make up the image.

I think these have so many similarities, she actually came to the MFA last fall and gave a talk.

I had to do a project like this last semester where I ended up scanning creamed corn on the flat bead (protecting it of course) and make a collage. I can't say this process was too captivating for me, but maybe without all the strict guidelines my teacher put in place it would be more interesting.
I actually disagree on the bottom right and say that I think it needs something on the top left. I want the landscape to be more abstracted, the white bubbles look like snow globes. I think that black material is soooo luscious. It makes me want to take a canvas and mold fabric like that into forms over a painting. In this the idea that the fabric was scanned and compressing the 3-d to 2-d the layers through which we see this super realistic blanket?

I have to go to sleep I don't know if I finished my thought or not but I'm runnin on 2 hours. WOO art school.

  4. Well I cant identify all those objects, but, I do think your onto something with this, is it all neg scans or is it scanograms as well?

  5. this is really exciting! i love this piece for its qualities of humor, and yet feels very serious. and there is no shame in the game :) if this is what is making your heart flutter, by all means, continue it. i don't even know if i can explain what objects were used.

Also at first glance, I shared a similar reaction with the connection to Inka Essenhigh, but you are approaching this in a whole different spectrum.

You always do great things, so try it all, but i would certainly like to see more :)

  6. This is really great T, love the colors and different textures. Compositionally....I dont think it needs anything. :)

tis quite a mysterious peice though, with the eyes comin out of the tree and the eyes bottom left too, very interesting. Almost dreamy, also makes me think of a journey, dont know why. I can only point out what has been already though...

  7. erin and gab, thanks for the link! i really like that work! hope to be able to spend some more time looking at it in the coming weeks. next project is going to be all scanning of stuff. similar vein, more topically focused.

erin, i was like physically ill at the thought of having to do this, so i can totally understand you're distaste! but, our only guideline was at least 5 layers. so, once i got over my own hang-ups, it was kinda fun. basically, i just don't think of this work as "photography." for me, its something totally different. not sure if others working in this vein would take offense or not. but, this feels like something totally different.

hmmm, something on the top left. nah. i like it. :) i didn't figure out until the other day another tool that i think will help me in future work, to distort the textures more to my liking. erin, i lose you in the last sentence...explain. i'm curious to hear more about your thoughts on taking this into a painting.

erika - its 100% scanograms. no negatives involved. going to try to keep going that way - no negs for this work, for a while at least.

gab - thanks for the props and kind words. i was kinda going for some dark humor. at least, in my own head, it was funny...

dreamer - thanks for the comments! you should try it some time. kinda trippy to see what the scanner will do...
