Middle America's Recession

This is one of my edits, I included my captions because hey, they are important too.  I have a few different picture packages that I have been playing around with.  The final output of this story is going to be in multimedia which includes about 40 some images accompanied and timed up with audio interviews that I covered while I was out there.  Currently it runs about 6:30 and I'm trying to cut it down to 5 minutes, I wish their was some way I could post a SWF file on this blog but, looks like I'm outta luck on that one.

Summary:
Angela and Scott are Generations Y'ers and they are a family of 5 on a single income.  Scott works construction and has been in the Navy for 8 years.  In today's economic times they are finding ways to cut back.  The word "Budget" means a lot to them, and these days it seems to be getting tighter and tighter for their family.  This is a look into their everyday life.

when we get back

The first is from last semester, the blurry scene's that I am still trying to decipher. The second, third, and fourth are from this semester. The first two are some of the window scenes I have been attempting here and there, and frankly, I'm unsure on how I feel of the two. The fourth is large format and is one of the portraits I have been working on, which are semi-snapshot aesthetic in high quality. And the last image is one from DCAD from a fundraiser at the end of the year. I kind of enjoyed this image, wanted to share. I also have a paper I wrote on myself concerning my work. in third person. Eventually I will use it in a book of my work in April. I am hesitant to put it on the blog, but wondering if you would all be interested in reading it? Feedback? Give me some CRITICAL views on the work and I will try and get some more current work when I can. Miss you all dearly.

A "sneek peek"

Ok, I have been off in the midwest shooting for seven days straight, from the time I woke up till the time I went to bed, the camera did not leave my sight.  Sometimes even coming with me to the bathroom (to keep out of reach from the children).  I have been slacking on posts, I'm currently sifting through and editing about 1500 images.... I have to get the number don to 5-7 by tomorrow and as of now I have knocked the number down to about 60.  Im not sure if this image is going to make the final cut but, I enjoy it.  I feel that its dynamic, it captures the moment and the energy of the setting.  This is a story I shot on my Sister.  Generation Y, the Economy, where do we lye?  I haven't settled on a Headline as of yet, I'm brian storming... maybe... Generation Y on one paycheck. ?

see into my future

my next grouping of paintings is going to involve this series of pictures taken of fortune tellers. Since the downfall of our economy people are looking more into fortune tellers to give them confidence as to wether or not they will have financial success in their new business or if they will loose their job. These images are take from the NY times video news further expanding the series of images received from sources in which we obtain our information of the world. The critique of communication this time goes further than the news images distortion and into the mode of receiving information through other peoples supernatural talents. Belief, hope, fright, and ridiculousness. I think the source images are pretty funny though.. here are four of my favorites.

The Seven Ravens - The Sun and The Moon

Sorry for the absence, both in comments and in posts. Crazy busy and then sick. Back to work, now.

This is the first from series illustrating the Bros. Grimm story of the Seven Ravens. Its all scanned objects. No "photographs." I'm not working chronologically, but wanted to post before I'm finished with group, as I'm interested in feedback. Crit next week. I know they're a little barren, and yet...not sure that I'm ready to add more. I really don't want to include figures at this stage...too much risk of them becoming "doll-like." Thoughts?

The text for this portion of the story:

"And now she went continually onwards, far, far to the very end of the world. Then she came to the sun, but it was too hot and terrible, and devoured little children. Hastily she ran away, and ran to the moon, but it was far too cold, and also awful and malicious, and when it saw the child, it said, "I smell, I smell the flesh of men."

New painting stage one-ish

Sorry guys I've been so busy with classes I kept forgetting to bring my good camera to the studio to get new shots of my camera, so unfortunately I missed photographing a few other stages.. but here it is:

I bought wax medium for this painting because the last got too flat, I'm building up a lot more paint.
Because of the size it will end up being a painting that I keep up all semester to add to. Its like one me x one me.
I'll continue to show a few folds in the source material/oil stains from the studio, addressing photography as my source but creating a obvious divide between the two mediums. I'm really not into photo realism (for myself).
The photos are from newspapers which I take to the photocopier and distort the hell out of by blowing the up. I think I'm trying to address mostly the way we are fed information and its obvious filters and problems of these modes of communication But sometimes the image is recognized, which leads to a bigger experience of memory and history.

Next project I'm thinking about a diptych or longer painting that deals with time. So maybe following a story through a few images spread out in time by NY times... I'll finish this one first, hopefully by friday.

PS- get me a crit POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE with the knowledge that this is not finished yet (ie i have more time) and have a crit coming up.
