This was an older image from about a year ago. I never printed it, but I was looking at it recently on my desktop and enjoyed it. I have been shooting color this past semester, but was thinking of straying back into black and white. Once I can properly scan my colors, I will be posting them. Let me know what's on your mind.

  1. this image makes me ache a little. so stark. one guy all alone; a dark figure against a washed out landscape - referencing erin's philosophical post...isn't that how so many of us FEEL these days? i'm also always a sucker for the water's edge. it looks too cold and barren to be fishing (even if those weren't really the conditions that day). looks like he's hiding from your lens with his cap down.

compositionally, the division of space is fantastic, as usual. i might have turned the image a slight amount to get the horizon line parallel with the top edge. but the horizon/horizonatal plus the strong diagonal makes for a really interesting division of the space. i also, kinda wish the guy was shifted a little bit off of center. but, if i remember, correctly, you place a fair number of your people in the center. so, in the context of the rest, it works.

pretty much, i just want to see more. more black and white. and i'm REALLY curious/excited to see your color work. i only saw a few last fall and am looking forward to seeing your final batch from the end of the semester. can't wait!

  2. I agree I really love the silent feeling of this photograph, its funny you ae also thinking of going back to black and white, im going to be working on a small body of work in black and white this semester too, my school has some pretty awesome b&w facilities so i think i want to go back and work some in there, i really miss it. So yes, definately continue with this, i would like to see more, the simple division of space and the distance you are away from the subject gives me some breathing room where i feel like your color work is alot closer to your subjects and there is more energy going on, this is a nice contrast to that.

  3. i feel like i have seen this before. it looks different in this context; the blog. i identify with it more now. i get the lost and lonely. I wonder about the other fishing pole. the air feels cold. or is it that it is just cold where i am and i add that to the image. it is different than what i have seen before. it is out of the city. it is the same in that the formal elements are similar. centered figure alone or seemingly so. Does it point to something being that it resonates with you? It has feeling and is an interesting image that asks questions. I respond to it but think it needs to be more resolved or refined. perhaps it needs a context for me to buy in completely. More of the same kind of image and feeling. don't get me wrong, it is a very strong image. Very powerful.. i just want more with the same feeling and impact. good luck, you can do great things with your work. just do what your heart and your gut tells you.
