Gerald Slota INTENSE 2 day workshop!

So today and yesterday have been really amazing. My professor invited Gerald Slota to do a two day workshop with my class. The two assignments had very strict deadlines that were only a couple of hours long, simulating the time frame of working with a magazine or an editorial job. The first assignment was deconstructing another classmates work and reworking it in your own style. We all picked randomly out of a hat what student we got, and then they picked what peice of artwork to give us. The second assignment was make 6 different self portraits that describe you and bring out your essence, no straight-forward imagery of yourself of course. Annddd here are the results! I will post the installation i made with these pictures tomorrow or tonight and the first project!

  1. Katie,
I think the use of layering in these images is very beautiful. I am drawn to the ones where the layers become part of the image like the statue of liberty one, the photo booth, and the one with the floral stitching. these feel stronger as images for me because the overlay is muted. I cant wait to see the installation! Also, how did you construct these? Im oh so curious...

  2. i LOVE this stuff! so, are these from the first or second assignment or both? i love the bed photo with embroidery overlay and the one just above it. those seem the most "katie" to me. but really, all are very interesting.

so, where are the images of the installation????

this sounds like a really great workshop! glad you got that experience. looking forward to seeing some follow-up images from you.

  3. I slacked on getting the images of the installation on here, haha but i will. These are from the second assignment, the first assignment we had to recreate another students photograph ill put that one up too. And to answer how they were made, i scanned in the articles of clothing and the old photographs and used overlay in photoshop and turned down the opacity on the articles of clothing/jewelry. I really enjoyed doing these alot, i would like to create a body of work using this maybe relating to found objects on the street, and photographs im taking now. its a nice break from doing my other work.
