kids

These are two color images that I finally managed to scan. Hence the title of the post, they are both of children, which I find peculiar compared to the men that usually fill my frame. Recently, I want to focus the color work on looking through windows I pass by, primarily store scenes and laundry mat colors, and going into shopping malls or indoor arenas. I'm also keeping with black and white and seeing how spontaneous it can go :) Let me know your thoughts.

We were discussing Elijah Gowin and his photographer father Emmet. (Tricia I know you know of them well)


I find it interesting to think about the context of the images, fragility of the environment, threat of technology, reality of photography... and look at the work of Elijah and then the work of Emmet (or vise versa). They have similar roots but there are very interesting differences, generational differences. We are pretty much the generation after Elijah.. so lets see.

welcome to the world inside my head

as much as i hate to say it, i think i might like this photoshop collage thing! what's happening to me?!?!?! soon, i'll be drawing and painting on my photos, too! this was really sort of fun and fast to make once i figured out a direction. granted it took me a week to get over the whole idea of making a "photo collage" out of scans. compositionally, it still needs something bottom right, but i'm ok with it as-is, for the quick example that it is.



a prize goes to the person who can correctly id all of the different objects used to make up the image.

watching

i ride public transportation almost every day to school. mostly the bus, but occasionally the light rail (that sucks as it requires walking a mile uphill, both ways...usually in the snow). like erika, i often find myself staring or captivated by someone on the bus or something that flashed past in the window. such as:

it feels really strange to post this stuff as they're all more sketches (if that) than actual focused ideas. none of this revolves around a central concept. there is no theory or artist statement to accompany. frankly, it all feels rather snapshot-ish. is that evident? is that bad? is that good? is that just a thing? i think i feel kind of vulnerable posting these, as i have no idea what i'm doing with them. and yet, i'm curious...feedback? that and the process of editing them and putting them out there is helping me think about the work. erika, i'm looking to you as my editing guru...if you made this a series, what would you hack and why?

Studio Update 2

My painting in middle stages:






I was doing a lot of blotting, palette knife scrapes, stickers, towels, anything I found on the floor/in my studio to take the layers away (then dry, heh oil paint), when I was using paper it made some nice drawings.

Wish I got a picture just a day or two ago there was this painting under all that gray that I loveddddd, but I like the way he can completely let go of an entire painting/section.

I got gray oil paint on the photo copy so I included that into my painting. The source material is getting pretty important in my work.

Riding the Bus

Do you ever catch yourself in the moment, staring at something or someone, not knowing how long you have been staring at them/it?  Well I do that a lot.  Get lost in thought and then I wake up and theirs someone staring back as me with a weird look on their face.  Well yesterday I was doing that on the bus but, it was the back of this woman's head, I became so intrigued by her hair and the way it was laying perfectly on her head.  Not one hair was out of place, why was I contemplating this? I have no idea, but I want to start photographing these moments that I have, deep in thought, so here is the first of many... What do you guys think? Is it crazy, maybe I'm crazy? Although I think that we have already established that...

some things just aren't meant to be

today, i prepped photos for submission to a juried photo show at school. planned to submit 5 of the night series images. the two posted previously and these:







and then the last one fell over and the glass broke. cut my fingers real bad on the glass, but taped em up, found a hardware store nearby, and bought new glass. and then i broke it too, trying to untape the cardboard packaging. so, i think i'm just submitting the top two and the two previously posted images. who knows, what, if any will make it in. i like the idea of an even 5. and yet, not meant to happen, i think.

oh yeah, had to spend the evening sanding my table with a rubber glove taped to my hand to keep dust out of the wounds. is that what i means to suffer for one's art?

Traces in The Digital Frame

Ok, I finally got my act together and edited some of my digital images from El Salvador.  I must admit my film looks a lot nicer but, I haven't gotten around to scanning it in.  Anyhow here are a few images that I really enjoy from my rough edit thus far.  When I was working on the image with the Salvadorian men's heads in the frame with the mountains, I thought "I can see Honduras from my kitchen window." Hehehehe because those mountains are Honduras, that was in Perquin in the northern part of El Salvador. (we really could see that from our kitchen window, that's what makes it funny.)  These images are not from the story I shot there, I haven't edited them yet, those are to come. :)

-I also attached this Link to help you guys understand what happened in El Salvador a little bit better it's a multimedia piece that Susan Meiselas (of Magnum) worked on.  It's about a town called El Mozote, where their was a massacre and everyone in the the town (with the exception of those who escaped days before) lost their lives.  I went to this town, they are just starting to rebuild now, after 25 years.  I know this stuff is heavy, but I'm finding more and more everyday that I am becoming very concerned with Social Justice.
